The state Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has claimed to have arrested four personstwo handlers and two couriers for allegedly circulating counterfeit notes across the country.
This is the first time any investigating agency has arrested handlers as most of the earlier arrests stopped at the grass root level with arrests of couriers, making it impossible for the probe agenicies to understand hierarchy in the counterfeit business.
The two alleged handlers Mohammed Rafiqul Raeezuddin Islak (23) and Pratap Gogan Chowdhury (24) have been staying in Mumbai for a few months. While Islak stayed at Dharavi,Chowdhury lived in Nallasopara. The duo hails from Malda.
Their arrest followed the arrest of two alleged couriers,Samed Rabiul Sheikh (35) and Dildar Hussain Abdul Haidi (45). Shiekh is a mason and Haidi is a zari worker and both are Delhi residents. They were arrested outside Sagar Hotel,Byculla. The ATS has seized fake notes in the denominations of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000. According to ATS,the notes worth around Rs 13,60,000.
The entire counterfeit booty, according to the suspects, comes from across the border, expecially from villages in Bangladesh, said ATS officers. Another counterfeit dealer and a wanted accused,Ghulam Murtuza Nurulhadi, reportedly runs the Malda operations. This arrest is significant as Murtuza was handling the Malda operations through the arrested, ATS chief Maria said.
