Over 35 people have been arrested for automobile thefts,house break-ins,extortion,octroi evasion and smuggling in the last fortnight,according to the police.
The Colaba police unearthed an inter-state automobile theft racket last week and arrested five men who have reportedly stolen over 20 vehicles from Mumbai,Navi Mumbai and Thane in the past year.
Also,last Wednesday,while investigating the theft of an SUV,a team of Colaba police officials had gone to West Bengal and arrested four accused who had confessed to stealing the vehicle.
On the basis of the interrogation of Guddu Mohammed Razaq Khan,Manmohan Bhavani Charansingh,Rishukumar Singh and Sher Bahadur Pathak who were brought back to Mumbai along with the SUV,we traced the kingpin of the racket Tahijur Hasan alias Bablu. We arrested Hasan from a plush,air-conditioned flat in Navi Mumbai and also recovered two SUVs from him. We also seized a set of 60 duplicate keys, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone I) Vishwas Nangre-Patil.
Similarly the J J Marg police arrested 20-year-old Rafiq Ali Sayyed and recovered a motorbike from him that had been reported stolen a few months back. Sayyed has nine cases registered against him in various police stations across the city, Patil added.
In another breakthrough,the MRA police apprehended a taxi during nakabandi and seized Rs 31.06 lakh cash and ornaments worth Rs 9 lakh. They also arrested a gang of 18 men for attempting to evade octroi on cloth estimated at Rs 20 crore. The accused were caught along with the vehicles carrying the cloth.
The Cuffe Parade police arrested Kisandev Saha,27,Murgesh Nadar,33,Sanjay Jadhav,40,and Ronald Pereira,51,all residents of Reay Road,for trying to extort Rs 10 lakh from a businessman by posing as underworld dons.
