3 held for extortion bid in Vikhroli

Three persons were arrested on Sunday,hours after their bid to extort Rs 5,000 from a deliveryman of an agricultural product distribution firm,the Vikhroli police said.

Three persons were arrested on Sunday,hours after their bid to extort Rs 5,000 from a deliveryman of an agricultural product distribution firm,the Vikhroli police said.

They demanded the money to consume alcohol and when the deliveryman expressed inability to pay,the trio destroyed the goods he was carrying and fled with one of the cartons,the police said.

Pavan Ramnayan Singh (29),a deliveryman with Trikaya Agriculture Pvt Ltd that supplies fruits and vegetables to five-star hotels was loading the goods on Sunday evening when the three approached him,police said.

“According to his statement,they ordered him to hand over Rs 5,000 if he didn’t want to risk himself or the goods. Singh told them he didn’t have any money following which they trashed the cartons barring one they took with them. Singh informed his manager and then they registered a complaint,” said sub-inspector T S Koyande of Vikhroli police station.

Helped by witnesses,the police rounded up 10-15 men of whom Singh recognised one.

“We arrested Rupkumar Katharia who led us to the other two,Prashant Ahire and Nadeem Sayyed. They confessed that they wanted the money for alcohol and targeted Singh after they learnt he worked with a firm that does business with five star hotels,” said Koyande.
