2 held for robbing, murdering student on train

It was during the four-minute travel between Koparkhairane and Ghansoli railway stations that the duo murdered Jadhav, said railway police.

The Government Railway Police, Vashi, Tuesday arrested Jayant Babul Som alias (21) and Madhav Nakul Sarkar (22) in connection with the murder of Tushar Jadhav, a 22-year-old engineering student from Airoli, inside a luggage compartment of an early morning local from Panvel to Thane on trans-harbour line on June 12.

It was during the four-minute travel between Koparkhairane and Ghansoli railway stations that the duo murdered Jadhav, said railway police.

According to the police, the duo intended to rob Jadhav by threatening him with a knife, however, a “well built” Jadhav fought back. In the ensuing fight the accused slashed Jadhav on his neck and back. The two developed cold feet on seeing the victim bleed extensively.

“They left the weapon behind in the compartment and jumped from the train as it slowed down ahead of Ghansoli railway station,” said an officer.

“The accused had purchased a knife two days prior to murder with the intent to rob railway passengers. We are verifying whether the two accused had any previous cases against them,” said Rupali Ambure, Deputy Commissioner of Police, (Central), GRP.

On June 12, the two boarded the train at Mansarovar railway station. However, at that time there were other passengers inside the luggage compartment. At Koparkhairane, everyone else got off the train except Jadhav and the two accused.

On Tuesday night, Vashi GRP caught Som while he was walking on railway tracks near Sanpada railway station. After interrogating him, the police found Sarkar at Vashi railway station the same night.

Jadav’s relatives complained of negligence by railway constable in giving timely assistance to the victim.
“There was a half an hour delay in rushing Jadhav to the hospital, which could have been avoided,” said Jadhav’s maternal aunt.
