144 held for drunken driving

The Traffic Police apprehended as many as 144 drivers on the evening of December 24 for drunken driving. Police officers said most of the apprehended were party-goers and were heading back from various places after a Christmas eve binge.

“We shall be intensifying our drives against drunken driving during the last week of December as the probability of people consuming alcohol and driving vehicles is more. The 144 apprehended on Thursday will be produced in the court as soon as possible.”

Till December 24,a total of 12,973 cases of drunken driving were registered this year. Of these,9,123 drivers were sentenced to simple imprisonment. As many as 8,589 licences were suspended during this period.
