Customs officials on Friday caught a passenger smuggling gold into the country at the Mumbai airport.

Customs officials on Friday caught a passenger smuggling gold into the country at the Mumbai airport.

The pasenger was travelling on Air India’s Dubai-Mumbai flight, which reached CSIA around 4 am. “He was carrying only one bag. We found around 4 kg gold on his person,” an official said.

He said that the passenger was carrying 4.1 kg gold hidden in his body, including his groin and thighs. “Gold smuggling had dropped drastically after 1991,but the quantity of gold siezed here indicates that this is not the first time smugglers have been sneaking in gold. He has been travelling frequently; his last trip was on August 6 and we feel he is a regular smuggler,” the official said.
