Will Giaspura continue as mayor?

Backed by minister for Jails and Tourism Hira Singh Gabria,Giaspura finally got to be the mayor,but senior party leaders made them reach an unofficial understanding,wherein it was decided that Giaspura would stay as the mayor for the first two and a half years and the second term would be taken up by the junior Bains.

With Giaspura having completed his two years,the Akali leadership was now pressurising the mayor to step down. But with Bains now behind the bars,the situation may not change.

Balwinder Singh Bains,the elder brother of Simerjeet Singh Bains,is optimistic. “Giaspura has some more months to go and by that time we will be able to tide over this controversy. We will then stake claim as decided. But then much will depend on the party high command.”

Meanwhile,Giaspura’s mentor Hira Singh Gabria is not ready to buy the claim.

“I was in the meeting when the so called compromise was struck. There was no such deal. I can vouch for the fact that Giaspura was given the post of mayorship,which he will serve for the complete five years and there is going to be no change at least under the garb of any such deal,” he said.

Mayor incommunicado
Mayor Hakam Singh could not contacted despite repeated attempts. His staff said,“Mayor saheb is at his farm house and contacting him is not possible.” Hakam Singh’s mentor minister Hira Singh Gabria too expressed surprise and said,“This is not right. I will call him up and tell him (Hakam Singh) not to do so.”
