So near yet so far away. That was the case when Chandigarh lad Vijayant Malik reached the semi-finals of the $15,000 ITF men’s Futures tennis tournament at Meshref,Kuwait. He needed to win the match against seventh-seeded Malek Jaziri of Tunisia to book a place in the finals. However,he lost the match but was richer by few points which saw his men’s ranking improve from 1500 to 1040- a gain of 460 ranks. “I was quite satisfied with my performance in the tournament as I got to play against some very good players. It was extremely pleasing to beat top seed Sebastian Rieschick of Germany in the quarter-finals,” said the 19-year-old.

After his success in Kuwait came a disappointment as he suffered an early exit from the $10K Malaysia F2 Futures in Kuala Lumpur. “It was much tougher to play in Malaysia than Kuwait as the tournament had some very good players from all over the world. I lost the match to a Korean who was the eighth seed. The increase in my confidence level and the experience that I got from these tournaments was very enriching,” shared Vijayant.

After returning back from Malaysia,Vijayant took part in the $15K India F5 Futures in New Delhi but a late surge from Vivek Shokeen saw him bow out of the tournament in the singles category in the first round. However,an urge to prove himself motivated him to do well in the doubles and finding an able partner in Navdeep Singh, the duo reached the semi-finals where they went down to the second seeded pair of Vishu Vardhan and Divij Sharan.

Vivek Shokeen, who had beaten him in the previous encounter, once again maintained his authority after defeating Vijayant in the first round of the singles category of $15000 ITF men’s Futures tennis tournament at the DLTA. However,it was a good day for Vijayant and his partner Navdeep Singh as the duo cruised to a fine 7-5,6-3 win over Chandril Sood and Lakshit Sood to enter the quarter-finals. “We played well on Monday. Now,we might meet the pair of Vishnu Vardhan and Divij Sharan on Wednesday. We are ready for them,” he said in a confident voice.

After this Vijayant will participate in the $15K ITF Future’s Men tournament in Iran given that the peaceful conditions are prevalent there. “All the Commonwealth Games probables will participate in the tournament. If they go then I will also join them, however,I heard that the situation is not well in Iran right now,” said the Chandigarh player.
