The striking transporters observed a chakka jam on the Samrala Chowk for 15 minutes on Saturday to press their demands. The members were protesting the arrest of president Charan Singh Lohara under the Essential Services Maintenance Act.
However, the Punjab government has appealed to the Centre to give an ear to the striking transporters instead of arresting them. Meanwhile, the Union Transport Minister will meet a delegation of the transporters union on
Monday. Ludhiana Transporters Welfare Association Chairman said,The government had agreed to our demands in July last year but did not implement them in letter and spirit. We are also incurring losses but we have no choice.
Meanwhile, the members of the small scale industry association protested at the Partap Chowk for over two hours to protest irregular power supply in the city. The members of the association said that due to long power cuts which exceed more than five hours on a daily basis, they are incurring losses.
Later,DSP Harmohan Singh tried to pacify industrialists and made them speak to Punjab State Electricity Board Chief Engineer B S Bath. Bath assured that the supply will improve in the coming days.
