The Government of Punjab has constituted a three member selection committee to hunt for the next Vice Chancellor for Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). The term of Dr Manjit Singh Kang, the current Vice Chancellor, comes to end in April.
The three-member committee constituted comprises of the chief secretary, financial commissioner (development) and Punjab Farmers Commission chairman Dr G S Kalkat. The panel will finalise a name for PAU in 30 days.
When contacted,Dr Kalkat said,I am yet to receive a formal letter on this. I was asked about being a part of this committee some time back and I had actually refused. I had suggested that member of the PAU Management Board should be made a part of this committee.
While there are many names in the fray for the vice-chancellors post, the committee may consider Dr Kang too for an extension. On behalf of Dr Kang,a group of scientists working in the US have written letters to the members of the PAU Board urging them to consider Dr kang for another tenure.
Among the other achievements of Dr Kang stated as a reason for the extension,Dr Kangs meeting with US President Barrack Obama in Mumbai in November last year too is mentioned in this letter.
Meanwhile,in an interesting twist,Ludhiana (West) MLA and Chief Parliamentary Secretary Harish Rai Dhanda too wants a role in the selection of the next Punjab Agricultural University VC. At the same time,Dhanda wants to be a member of the PAU Board of Management too.
Asked for his comments on the matter,Dhanda said,PAU falls in my constituency and a huge section of voters come from here. People from PAU come to me regularly with their complaints and issues. I met the Chief Minister at a meeting where I requested him that our point of view too should be considered.
On the issue of his being incorporated into the PAU Board of Management,Dhanda added,I am a farmer also and as an MLA,I can be a part of PAU Board.
