The battle continues

The April 10 convocation ceremony of Baba Jaswant Singh Dental College...

The April 10 convocation ceremony of Baba Jaswant Singh Dental College, the first ever in its decade old history, would have been a news about the college and its achievement had it not been for a highly-charged speech by one of its interns right after the convocation ceremony.

Putting her career at stake for a ‘cause’ that she terms as a fight for her and other students’ rights, intern Manraj Kaur Dhaliwal was not only able to seek the attention of the alumni and the vice-chancellor of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, who were present in the college at the time, her act of ‘courage’ also made her the talk of the town.

So what is Manraj doing now? “I am still fighting and will take my struggle to its rightful end,” she says,in a composed yet firm voice as she narrates the turn of events post her ‘fame’.

“The college has placed me under suspension now and is using pressure tactics,” she tells,“But my parents are with me and I am now fighting a legal battle about the whole issue as I have filed a writ against it. I have full faith in the judiciary.”

Manraj has reportedly alleged that the college had been fleecing the students by not paying them the mandatory stipend (now scrapped) under the Dental Council of India and BFUHS guidelines, charging them for various things without giving any receipts. They were showing in their records that the college had provided students with dental kits worth Rs 2 lakh, she alleged.

However, the college authorities have always outrightly denied all the charges every time they were highlighted, saying that the intern had some vested interests and there was no truth in the issue.

On her decision to launch a campaign against the alleged irregularities in the college for which she has now garnered support from various sections of the society,Manraj said there were various incidents that happened in the college during her four years of studies which were weighing heavy on her mind and finally pushed her into the decision.

“I know my career is also at stake now but I have known it from the very beginning. Even if I have to sacrifice my profession for this,I will. It is now a battle against the system and to make myself heard,I will go to the highest level of judiciary to seek justice.”

Her friends say that Manraj has been known to be a bright student of the college who excelled in all fields.

“I used to actively participate in the activities of the college. But gradually the injustice started getting on my nerves and, therefore,I decided to bring it out. I have always had the courage to raise my voice against anything that I think is injustice to me or to others.

“Now,I have all the required evidence to prove whatever I have alleged and issues I have raised,” she asserts.
