In the wake of the recent ragging incident, the Panjab University authorities are making every attempt to avoid such incidents on campus in the new academic session.
Not only has a sensitisation programme been launched by the vice-chancellor,but he is also undertaking interactive sessions with students while advocating zero tolerance for such incidents.
Also,in another move by university authorities, they have forwarded the report on the written complaint given by the UICET first year student, who alleged ragging,to UT Administrator and Advisor.
On Friday,a second interactive session was undertaken by the Vice-Chancellor Prof R C Sobti in the university campus. A similar session was undertaken by him on Thursday with the students of UICET (University Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology)- Tanuj Anand who had accused four of his senior students of ragging in his hostel (hostel number 3). While the complaint does not mention the names of the accused,it is believed that while three are from second year the fourth one is a third year student of UICET. Also, one is said to be son of an IAS officer posted in Jodhpur.
I have launched a sensitisation programme for all students of the university. I will take personal interactive session with freshers as well as existing students of almost all departments. This is to ensure that no such incident of ragging is reported on campus, said Professor Sobti.
He further added that strict advocacy of zero tolerance for ragging would be followed on campus. The students were asked to report immediately to the authorities in case of any such incident.
The report of the entire incident, including the complaint, and the written request stating not to take any action against the accused, has been sent to UT Administrator Shivraj V Patil and Advisor Pradip Mehra, said Prof Sobti.
During the interactive session with UIET students at Law Auditorium this morning, the vice-chancellor cautioned students not to indulge in any kind of ragging which is a cognizable offence and crime. Any student found guilty of ragging or abetting the incidence of ragging will be dealt with exemplary punishment as prescribed by law.
Prof. Sobti also made all the students who were present in the auditorium take an oath not to indulge in the practice of ragging the fellow students.
During the interactive session with the students,Prof Sobti promised that some of their problems would be properly attended to in a given time frame. When some students raised the issue of excluding students of Swami Sarvanand Giri Regional Centre (SSGR RegionalCentre),Hoshiarpur from the process of placements,Professor Sobti assured them that the issue would be placed before the duly constituted committee comprising Dean Student Welfare,Professor Naval Kishore,Director UIET,Dr Renu Vij,and some of the representatives of UIET students.
