Sunita Sharma is a housewife-cum-entrepreneur…an oxymoron? But Sunita has managed to do just that — by converting her hobby of cooking into a commercial venture, she has successfully combined economic independence with family life.

“Actually,I was goaded by my family and friends to spread my wings,” says Sunita. And to prove them right, this soft-spoken demure lady ventured into making sherbets, squashes, chutneys and eggless cakes.

In the beginning,Sunita only made things on order but soon word spread and people started coming to her for chutneys and sherbets. From there,Sunita progressed to organising kitty parties. “See everything is connected with my cooking. I hold about four to five kitty parties a month,in which I provide the space and food for a gathering of twenty. My only condition is that the food will be 100 per cent vegetarian.”

She has a dedicated team of seven helpers to handle all orders. “I work leisurely and do not let work bog me down.”

Apart from preparing her regular fare of sherbets Sunita also stocks all kinds of sherbets and squashes like jeera, bael, badam, bhramhi, mango and so on. “In summers,it’s hard to keep pace with the demand,” she says.

Recommending her idea to all young homemakers,Sunita says: “Working from home is one of the best ideas I had as I do not have to ignore my home or children. Moreover, with the increasing number of working women, demand for ready-to-eat food is going up. Also, everyone is very health conscious now and do not want preserved fooditems; they want fresh home-cooked food. Supplying tiffins is an area where housewives can easily earn some extra money”
