Martyr Sukhdev Thaper’s ancestral house was opened by Tehsildar Gagandeep Singh in the presence of the members of Shaheed Sukhdev Thaper Memorial Society at Naughara mohalla on Friday.

A class IV employee from archaeology department opened the locks as no one from this department turned up. The peon has been deputed to act as a caretaker by the archaeology department.

The house had been lying locked since January 16,2012,and it was opened after Deputy Commissioner Rahul Tewari formed a three-member committee comprising the tehsildar, one member from archaeology department and Ashok Thaper, president of the memorial society.

Ashok Thaper said,“The condition of the house was in a bad shape as it had not been cleaned for more than 16 months. We were surprised to see a peon from the archaeology department instead of their representative. We were maintaining this house through voluntary services while the government will be paying Rs 25,000 per month salary to the caretaker.”

The government had planned to make the house of the martyr a museum. Earlier,it was being maintained by the society and later it was taken into possession by the government. Now the government authorities are expected to start work on the museum from Saturday onwards. However,no details were divulged by the tehsildar to the members of the memorial society.

Ashok Thaper, however, said they had already given in writing that their caretaker should be deployed here who could provide services free of cost and more members of society should be included in the committee.
