MC meet postponed
The general House meeting of MC,which was scheduled to be held on Thursday,has been postponed. The decision has been taken following threats given by the safai karamchari association,who have not been regularised till date. The association members gheraoed Deputy Mayor Sunita Aggarwal along with union leader Vijay Danav on Wednesday and threatened to disrupt the MC meeting,said sources.

Dog sterlisation drive fails to kick off in city
The much-hyped stray dog sterlisation programme,which was scheduled to start on Wednesday,could not take off because company Doggie Lane failed to get itself registered with People For Animals before starting the drive. Although Senior Deputy Mayor Parveen Bansal said the company would get itself registered in a day or two,the MC Commissioner has not ruled out the possibility of giving the contract to GADVASU.

Three-day sports meet opens at dental college
The three-day annual sports meet kicked off at Baba Jaswant Singh Dental College and Hospital on Wednesday. The chairman of the college,while declaring the games open,congratulated the students and staff for organising the sports meet. Principal Dr D S Kalsi also addressed the gathering,stressing that sports help in physical,mental and intellectual development of an individual. It builds up a healthy atmosphere and trains them to work in unity with team spirit,he said.

Inspection conducted at Sat Paul Mittal School
On the instructions of Bachittar Singh,District Education Officer (Secondary) Ludhiana,District Science Superintendent Pradeep Kapoor conducted inspection of Punjabi language at Sat Paul Mittal School. The team also conducted dictation and oral test to evaluate the command of students over the language.

CIPHET director gets eminent engineer award
CIPHET Director Dr R T Patil was awarded eminent engineer award of Institution Engineers India during the 23rd national convention of agricultural engineers organised by Maharashtra Centre of Institution of Engineers held at Mahatma Phule Agricultural University,Rahuri,on February 6. The award has been conferred on him for his contribution to agricultural engineering.

Manojigyasa holds psychology meet at GCW
Manojigyasa,a Society of Psychology students of Government College For Women,organised a function in the college auditorium on Wednesday. The highlights of the function was a play Distress – A Mess written,directed and enacted by the students of psychology. It reflected the problems of increasing stress in a student’s life and how psychology can help offset it . Subah Sharma was declared best actress.

DC asks Excise dept to release VAT refunds
In order to solve the problem of pending VAT refunds,Deputy Commissioner Vikas Garg has recommended to the Excise and Taxation department to release 75 per cent of VAT refunds on the basis of indemnity bonds submitted by the industry. The decision was taken in a meeting held under the Industry Facilitation Act -2005 on Wednesday. The remaining 25 per cent can be released once the industrialist submits C and H forms. The DC has also asked the department to issue password for e-filing of VAT returns within two days,instead of the more than a month time period being taken now.

I-T sleuths swoop on units in Mandi Gobingarh,Khanna
The Income Tax department on Wednesday conducted raids at steel units in Mandi Gobindgarh and Khanna to detect tax evasion by industrialists. Raids were conducted on Madhav Steel Industry,Gyan Group of Industries and RK Group of Industries. A total of 18 premises of these units were raided,of which seven were residences of these industrialists. The raids were conducted on the directions of Director,Investigations,R K Goyal and more than 100 vehicles had gone to the steel town to carry out the raids. The raids are expected to continue for another day.

PCTE adjudged best B-school
Punjab College of Technical Education has been adjudged the most outstanding B-school of north India by Dainik Bhaskar B-School Leadership Awards. The awards are scheduled to be held on February 12 at Taj Lands End,Bandra in Mumbai.

PSEB employees observe 1-day strike
Protesting against the proposed unbundling of the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB),the board employees observed a daylong strike on Wednesday. According to the press release issued by the PSEB,around 84 per cent employees took part in strike while the PSEB Employees’ Federation claimed more than 90 per cent employees were on strike. However,taking precautionary measure,no power cuts were imposed on Wednesday. Meanwhile,many consumers were at the receiving end as linemen refused to redress complaints on Tuesday night on the plea that were on strike. In New Model Town area of the city,falling under SDE Amrik Singh,PSEB employees came late in the night to repair a one-day old fault but went back without doing any work. Deputy Chief Engineer Rachpal Singh said many complaints were received and faults were being repaired.
