Printers to go on strike on Saturday
Members of the Offset Printers Association in Ludhiana will be observing a days strike on Saturday to protest against the steep hike in prices of paper and paperboard. More than 500 printing presses in the city have decided to down shutters on Saturday. The members are demanding that paper mills intimate them a fortnight before increasing the prices and have even sought government intervention in the matter. The association has threatened to go on indefinite strike. The members also held a rally today. The other demands are printing the date of manufacture on the stock and abolition of import duty on paper and cardboard. The paper mills,on the other hand,maintain that import of waste paper from abroad has reduced and they are short of raw material,so they have no choice but to increase the prices. Sanjay Gandhi,general secretary,president Parveen Aggarwal and vice-president Kushal Jain of the printers association among others were present at the rally.
Bakshi takes over as ADCP
Rajnish Kumar Bakshi has taken over as Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Headquarters and Security). He has been posted to Ludhiana from Patiala where he was posted as SP (Operations). The post had been lying vacant after the retirement of Harish Kumar.
Beekeeping workshop at PAU
Dr M S Gill,Director of Extension Education,Punjab Agricultural University,said farmers who undergo training generally fare better. He was addressing participants at a beekeeping workshop held on campus on Wednesday. Gill said beekeeping can help enhance profitability,while adding that Punjab was producing about one-fourth honey of the country. Gurcharan Singh Mann was felicitated for his excellent performance for which he was bestowed with the Chief Ministers Award during the PAU Kisan Mela. The president and secretary of Progressive BeeKeepers Association (PBKA),Gurnek Singh and Ranjit Singh,respectively were also present.
Foundation stone of school laid
The foundation stone of Don Bosco Global School was laid on Wednesday. AN akhand path of the Guru Granth Sahib was organised by the management and staff. Sant Harnam Singh,Head of the Damdami Taksal graced the occasion. The ceremony concluded with distribution of langar.
School in Canada named after wrestler
Wrestling legend Tiger Jeet Singh has been honoured once again. This time,a new elementary school in Milton,Canada,has been named after him. The Tiger Jeet Singh Elementary school in Milton was given approval by the Halton District School Board on Thursday. According to a press release,The board said Singhs philanthropic and humanitarian work made the choice an easy one. The Indo-Canadian wrestler has lived in Toronto ever since migrating to that country in the 1960s. The school is set to open in September. Tiger Jeet Singh said,It is a big news and a matter of honour for our family. It will be a good opportunity to interact with children; my message to them will be to always remain healthy and study well.
Inderjit Nagpal is chief of CII
Inderjit Nagpal,senior managing partner,Haveli Ram Bansi Lal,and Amit Jain,director,Shingora Textiles Limited,have been selected as chairman and vice-chairman,respectively,for the newly formed CII Ludhiana Zonal Council for 2010-11.
World Health Day observed
The College of Nursing,Dayanand Medical College and Hospital,observed World Health Day 2010 on Wednesday. An awareness walk and screening clinic for obesity,hypertension and diabetes was held at the Rose Garden on the occasion,where Mohinder Pal Gupta,joint commissioner,Municipal Corporation,Ludhiana,was the chief guest. Dr Jasbir Kaur,principal,College of Nursing,DMCH,said urbanisation was associated with many diseases and the risk factors included tobacoo use,unhealthy diet,physical inactivity and alcohol abuse. The Municipal Corporation and SPS Apollo Hospitals jointly organised a camp Walk for Wellness on Wednesday. Morning walkers in the Leisure Valley got a chance to get their blood sugar and blood pressure tested free of cost. The local chapter of Indian Medical Association also held an awareness lecture at the Budhewal Co-operative Sugar Mill.
