PPCB takes samples from 8 dyeing units
A team of Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB),under the supervision of member secretary Babu Ram,took samples of eight dyeing units located on Tajpur Road,Bahadurke Road and Focal Point on Friday. At Tajpur Road,the Jindal dyeing unit was checked on Thursday night while Deepak Dyeing,Hari Om Dyeing and GMG Dyeing were inspected on Friday morning. At Bahadurke Road,Triveni Dyeing and a unit of Bawa Jain,husband of BJP councillor Ruchi Jain,were checked. The team also checked the dyeing units of Bhawan Processors and Supertex Dyeing at Focal Point. Officials wanted to check if municipal solid waste was being used as fuel in the dyeing units as it is a violation of pollution control norms.

Road samples collected
The Chief Vigilance department of the local government rook samples of the Chandigarh road,Link road near Dholewal and Ferozepur road opposite gate number 3 on Friday. The samples were taken to check the road quality and the report will come after a few days. SDO Mukesh Garg and Executive Engineer Rajinder Rai took the samples as part of an ongoing inquiry into the poor quality of city roads.

PAU Board approves Rs 319.96-cr budget
In the 214th meeting of the PAU Board of Management held at the PAU Camp Office,Mohali,on Friday,budget estimates of Rs 319.96 crore for the year 2010-11 were approved. Of this,90.70 per cent,0.65 per cent and 8.65 per cent is for salaries and accounts,travelling allowance and contingencies and wages,respectively. The allocation break-up of the budget for research,teaching,extension and general administration and others is 63.41 per cent,18.47 per cent,10.12 per cent and 8 per cent respectively. PAU Registrar Dr Raj Kumar Mahey said the expenditure on general administration is lesser than last year. He stated that the net deficit in the total budget is Rs 105.8 crore. PAU Comptroller A C Rana said the total budget has been approved for 369 schemes,including 123 non-plan agricultural schemes/plan agricultural schemes. Rana said 77.35 per cent of the total budget is for state non-plan agricultural schemes.

Locals protest against encroachment
Residents of Chand Colony in Haibowal held a protest against an encroachment in the area on Friday. The structure was demolished by MC authorities a few days ago but construction resumed once again,said Randhir Singh Sidhu,a complainant. “The encroacher is making a four-storey house on an area of 30 square yards. He has also encroached almost two-and-a half feet of the road as well. It is a violation of building bylaws as well as an encroachment of public road,” he said. Sidhu said that earlier they had approached P S Ghumman but he did not take any action. The deputation met additional Commissioner K P Brar today.

Book release at vet university
Dr V K Taneja,vice-chancellor,Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU),will release ‘Lok Man Manthan’ written by Dalvir Singh Ludhianvi on Tuesday in the committee room of Director of Extension Education,GADVASU. Dr Prithipal Singh Sohi and Dr Kulwinder Kaur Minhas will read their papers on the book. The Head of Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education,Dr Harish Kumar Verma will manage the stage.

Eye camps mark World Glaucoma Day
Dhami Eye Hospital organised a patient awareness programme on the occasion of World Glaucoma Day on Friday. Dr G S Dhami and his team examined around 200 patients of which 30 were diagnosed with glaucoma. They were given free medication and counselling. Meanwhile,Punarjot Eye Bank society launched a project ‘Sanjh’ at a seminar. Dr Tanuj Dada,Head of the Glaucoma department at AIIMS highlighted the latest research being undertaken for detection,treatment and surgery of glaucoma through video conferencing.
