A huge abdominal tumour weighing 4.10 kg was removed successfully from the abdomen of a 75-year-old man at the Christian Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday. The tumour was present in the pancreas and large intestine. Dr Navneet Kumar Chaudhary,professor and head of surgery and his team,including Dr Shekhar Upadhyay,Dr Pankaj Sircar and Dr Nitin Peter James operated upon the patient for four hours,who recovered well after surgery. It is important to be vigilant about subtle symptoms like loss of appetite,postprandial fullness and change in bowel habits,Dr Chaudhary said.

Information Commission pulls up MC
Punjab State Information Commissioner has taken a strong note of the issue that MC employees don’t turn up on the date of hearing and waste the time of the commission. Commissioner Darbara Singh Kahlon has pulled up MC Commissioner A K Sinha in two different cases,filed by one Kuldeep Singh Khaira from the Vigilant Citizen Forum. Khaira had sought information regarding flats being built by the MC under Jawahar Lal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission. He had sought details regarding technical and financial bids of contractors and payment done to them in two different cases,in which SDOs Sanjay Kanwar and Harpal Singh Bhullar had to come with their files to present the details. Both,however,failed to turn up and instead,Assistant Public Information Officer Harish Bhagat came. The Information commissioner has now kept the next date on June 10 and asked the SDOs to come in person with their files.

Nurses Day celebrated
SPS Apollo Hospital celebrated International Nurses Day on Wednesday. Various events,spread over the week,such as panel discussion,debate and poster making competitions came to a close. The function was presided over by Lt Col Neera Devi,chief of Nursing Services,who highlighted this year’s theme: Delivering Quality,Serving Communities. At Dayanand Medical College and Hospital,the International Nurses Week,organized by the College of Nursing,came to an end. Meanwhile,rich tributes were paid to Florence Nightingale,at Partap Public School. Speeches,poems and quotations drove home the message of the vital role that nurses play in the alleviation of suffering.

Nehru trust distributes scholarships
The Nehru Sidhant Kender Trust commemorated the 46th death anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru by distributing scholarships to more than 800 students on Wednesday. Punjab Chief Secretary S C Aggarwal was the chief guest. Rakesh Bharti Mittal,president of the Trust,distributed the awards. The Nehru Trophy for the inter-school declamation contest held earlier this month went to DAV Public School,Sarabha Nagar Extension.

‘Education has improved in Punjab’
The education level of the government schools has been uplifted and as a result,Punjab has now been placed at number three,said Dr Upinderjit Kaur,Education and Civil Aviation Minister,Punjab,while addressing the joint annual convocation of Bhutta College of Engineering and Technology and Bhutta College of Education on Wednesday. She said,“The number of students has increased in government schools and the state government has made a record by appointing 40,000 teachers in the Education department.” She awarded degrees to 500 BEd students and 100 engineering students. Jagdish Singh Garcha,former minister of Punjab,also addressed the students. Principal V K Sharma,Principal Joginder Mukherjee and District Education Officer Bachittar Singh were also present on the occasion.

New association of auto parts formed
Industrialists formed the Punjab Auto Parts Manufacturers Association on Wednesday,in which Surinder Singh Ryait,MD of G S Auto International Limited,was chosen as the president while Jasbir Singh Ryait and Charan Singh Kohli were announced to be the patrons. Subash Bajaj will be the chairman. Surinder Singh said their was no state-level body for this industry and they will add some more executive members soon.
