Doctors,companies surrender Rs 7.15 crore in I-T survey
During the income tax surveys held on Thursday,Rs 7.15 crore was surrendered by different firms. While Rs 3.2 crore was surrendered by Dr Balwinder Singh Walia,Rs 1.10 crore was got from Khanna Knitwears. Raghav Woollen Mills and Dhawan Woollen Mills surrendered Rs 90 lakh each while property dealer Rana Chawla and Khushi Ram and Sons surrendered Rs 80 lakh each. Dr Parminder Singh and Dr D S Walia surrendered Rs 20 and Rs 15 lakh respectively. “The assesses claimed that the surrendered amount is on account of undisclosed income. They have also been directed to pay the tax on the additional income surrendered within the financial year,” said Chief commissioner G S Randhawa.
City woman set on fire for dowry in Dehradun,husband held
Dehradun:A man was arrested for allegedly setting his wife on fire for dowry at Khurbura locality here,police said on Friday. Ravi Kumar was arrested following a statement by his wife Rama,who is battling for life in a government hospital. Rama,a native of Ludhiana,was married to Kumar nearly three years ago and since then he is harassing her for dowry,the police said. On Thursday,he beat up Rama and set her on fire and left the house,the womans family alleged. On hearing her cries,neighbours rescued her and rushed her to the hospital where she is stated to be in a critical condition,the police said.
Students visit industrial units
The Training and Placement Cell,in association with the students chapter of Indian Society for Technical Education,of the Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology (GNIMT) organised an industrial visit for its final year MBA students to GS Radiators Ltd on Friday. Training and Placement Officer Wing Commander S SArora (Retd) and his assistant Neha Mahajan accompanied the students. On behalf of GS Radiators Ltd,a warm welcome was accorded by Lukesh Rally (GM Operations). He interacted with students and gave a brief profile of the company and its functions with respect to HR department. Jaspreet Singh (Production Engineer) explained the working of the final assembly section. Manmeet Singh briefed the students on quality control. The BTech students of Gulzar Institute of Engineering and Technology were also taken for an industrial visit to Greatway Knitwears in Dhanadari Kalan.
Prize distribution ceremony held at school
A prize distribution ceremony was held at the Nankana Sahib Public School on Friday. Counsellor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria,who is also a member of the school management committee,gave away prizes to more than 400 students. A smart classroom designed by Helix technology,Hyderabad,was also inaugurated. Harmeet Kaur Waraich,the school principal,congratulated the winners. While addressing students,Gurcharan Singh Gill,director of the Nankana Sahib Education Trust,said co-curricular activities play a pivotal role in the holistic development of children.
Tree plantation drive held at BCM College
The BCM College of Education in collaboration with the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology organised a tree plantation and cleanliness drive Go Green on Friday as part of its campaign against climate change. Ludhiana Municipal Corporation Joint Commissioner M S Jaggi was the chief guest on the occasion. R B Khanna from the management committee was also present. Professor Ritu presented a report of the eco club and elaborated the various projects undertaken by the college including the rain water harvesting system. Jaggi also inaugurated a Herbarium for the restoration of endangered species of plants on the occasion. Students also cleaned the college premises.
Cultural fest at Khalsa Institute today
The Khalsa Institute of Management and Technology for Women will be holding its annual event Radiance 2010 on Saturday. Director of the institute,Dr Vijay Asdhir,said,It will be is a cultural and academic event,where students from different institutions can exhibit their talents. Ways to boost pulse production to be debated
The Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics,Punjab Agricultural University,in collaboration with the Ludhiana Chapter of Indian Institute of Pulse Research and Development is organising a brain storming session on the challenges,prospects and strategies to enhance pulse production in North India on Monday. Scientists from various agricultural universities as well as the Indian Institute of Pulses Research,Kanpur,are participating in the meeting. Dr J S Kolar,member,PAU Board of Management,will be the chief guest of the function. According to Dr J S Sandhu,president of the local chapter,the meeting holds relevance in the present context when prices of pulses are skyrocketing.
PAU flower show on Feb 25-26
The Punjab Agricultural University is organising a flower show to pay tribute to Dr M S Randhawa on February 25 and 26. Dr Ramesh Kumar,Head,Department of Floriculture and Landscaping,said the flower show will be held near the examination hall of PAU and will be inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor Dr Manjit Singh Kang. The entry forms and brochures will be available at the registration counter of the flower show,added Dr Kumar,chairman of the flower show committee. There will be competitions for flower arrangements (fresh and dry),cut flowers,flower ornaments,cacti,succulents,foliage,perennial flowering plants in pots and bonsai.
Dental centre launched by Rotary Club
Rotary Dental Care Centre was inaugurated at Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital by District Governor K C Kalra on Friday. He appreciated the efforts of the management,hospital staff and Rotary Club. Bakshi Mohinder Singh,chairperson of the hospital trust,was also present. Medical Superintendent Dr R S Sodhi highlighted the various facilities provided by the hospital.
Annual athletics meet held at GADVASU
The fourth annual athletics meet of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) was held on Friday where students from the College of Veterinary Science,College of Dairy Science and Technology and College of Fisheries actively participated. G S Sandhu,financial commissioner,Department of Animal Husbandry,Punjab,was the chief guest on the occasion. GADVASU Vice-Chancellor Dr V K Taneja inaugurated the meet. Equestrian events were also performed by NCC cadets of GADVASU. Bhangra performances added a touch of colour and culture to the event.
