Book principal for forcing retired lab assistant to end life: NGO

The Universal Human Rights Organization,an NGO,has said Jeet Singh,a senior lab assistant in a government school who burnt himself to death outside the deputy commissioner’s office here on December 20,was left with no option but to commit suicide because of the “harassment” meted out to him by the school principal. UHRO chief Satnam Singh Dhaliwal said: “We met his family members and found out that Jeet Singh had filed a complaint in the Punjab Human Rights Commission last year,alleging harassment at the hands of the principal of his school and a few staff members. Jeet Singh had claimed that the principal,in an attempt to settle some personal scores,was threatening him,trying to implicate him in false cases. He harassed him to the extent that Jeet Singh’s mental health began to suffer.” He added: “Jeet Singh’s complaint had been disposed of with the observation that this was a service matter and that the complaint should be made to the competent authority. Jeet Singh had been running from pillar to post for justice,which was denied to him. He killed himself in frustration.” The UHRO presented its findings to the police commissioner on Friday requested that an FIR be lodged against the school principal on charges of abetment to suicide.

Schools celebrate Christmas

Schools in Ludhiana celebrated Christmas with great enthusiasm on Friday. Darpan,a school for autistic children,organised a Christmas party at Lodhi Club where special children performed a play and dance. Ajit and Rani Bindra,residents of Sarabha Nagar,sponsored the party. Students of the Social Service Club of Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School,BRS Nagar,celebrated Christmas with children admitted in the paediatric ward of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital and the children of construction workers who are building the school auditorium and church. Sri Guru Harkrishan Public School,Doraha,Guru Nanak International Senior Secondary Public School,Model Town,USPC Jain Public School,Bal Bharti School and Ryan International School,too,celebrated Christmas with zeal.
