High-tension wires pose lethal problem

Loose hanging high-tension wire in Himmat Singh Nagar is posing problems for the residents of the area.

Loose hanging high-tension wire in Himmat Singh Nagar is posing problems for the residents of the area. Repeated accidents have occurred. One such accident happened,on Sunday, when a driver got electrocuted. He is presently admitted in CMCH.

The accident happened in front of a Oster Knitwears factory when a driver along with his helper was bringing in packing boxes. “A few of his boxes fell down and when he was re-loading the boxes in the truck,he got a strong electric jolt and fell unconscious. We got him admitted immediately and he is recovering,” said Jagmohan Singh owner of Oster Knitwears.

Singh said,“There is a 66 KV wire hanging loose for the past 5 years and in the past, two vehicles have been damaged due to the electric current. This time a man was injured. We have taken up the matter with the power corporation many times, but they have not done anything about it so far.”

The matter has been taken seriously by Knitwear club and President of this club,Vinod Thaper said,“We have done enough correspondence and now we are once again giving an ultimatum to the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL),that they should wake up.”

However A K Parbhakar, executive engineer of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited, said,“This line was erected in the area about 15 years ago when there was hardly any population in the area and after purchasing land at cheap prices, now the residents are asking us to shift the line.”

He added,“This is a matter for the transmission department and it will require huge expenses of not less than Rs 15 lakhs. So the question arises, who will fund the operation? because big towers will have to be erected for pulling the lines higher. These days residents don’t even allow us to erect one pole near their house.”

Industrialists however chalk this up to bad planning by the department. Thaper said,“Lines should be erected thinking about future planning of the area. Population will always shift to new areas. This is a very vague excuse.”
