Free education for visually impaired: PU Syndicate

After reserving seats for a single girl child and for students suffering from Cancer and AIDS,the Panjab University (PU) has followed up with another noble venture by announcing free education for the visually impaired. A brainchild of PU Vice-Chancellor Prof R C Sobti, the proposal for the same was accepted by the Syndicate at a meeting held on Saturday at the varsity campus.

The ‘completely’ visually impaired who secure admissions on merit to the different departments will be provided free food as well as hostel facility by the varsity.

Prabhjit Singh,a Fellow at the university, added: “This step will act as a motivational force for the visually impaired.”

In the other important decisions made today, the Syndicate permitted the increase in seats for off-campus management courses at the University Institute of Applied Management Sciences (UIAMS).

The department had requested for an increase in seats, from 400 to 500,after a number of defence personnel expressed desire for admissions to the department’s off-campus courses.

On the issue pertaining to the refund of fees to students who had left before the last date of admissions, the Syndicate authorised the V-C to decide on the issue after looking into the cases, where all seats have been filled by new admissions.

The Syndicate also approved an MPhil course for the Police Administration Department. The course will have 10 seats of which four will be reserved for the in-service police personnel while the remaining will be filled by students falling under the general category.

The Syndicate, meanwhile, deferred the decision on the proposal seeking a change in nomenclature of the English department. The members said that as there are other departments who also wish to change their names,a decision will be taken for all of them in the next Syndicate meeting.
