A Five-storeyed building housing a department store was gutted in a major fire that broke out due to a suspected short circuit on Thursday morning in Basti Jodhewal area on Rahon Road.
All five floors of the building of Paul Department Store were damaged in the fierce blaze. The fire department had to press all its existing fire tenders and manpower into service to control the blaze that lasted for nearly 10 hours.
The store sold goods ranging from garments to food items and sources said the owner suffered losses in crores in the fire that broke out around 7 am.
The fire officials also rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation. Kartar Singh,Assistant Divisional Fire Officer (ADFO),said: A short circuit in the air-conditioner could be responsible for the fire.
More than 100 fire tenders were engaged in the fire-fighting operations in an attempt to prevent the fire from spreading to the nearby areas, including a residential complex. Though the entire building was gutted in the fire,we were able to prevent it from spreading to other buildings, the ADFO added.
