The dog sterlisation project has hit a road block in BRS Nagar. On one hand, residents of H block have conveyed to Municipal Commissioner A K Sinha that they want all dogs removed from the colony as soon as possible. On the other hand, animal rights activist Dr Amanvir Kaur Mann is against the demand.
The residents said there have been more than eight dog bite cases in the last 10 days. Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) trustee Gurinderpal Singh Pappu, who lives in the same area,is supporting the residents.
Municipal commissioner Sinha said: People need to understand that the corporation can only provide for vaccination and sterlisation of dogs, but they cannot shift them from one area to another. NGOs should help the residents in understanding this issue.
General secretary of the Welfare Association,Vineet Arora, however, said: We just want the dogs to be sterilised and vaccinated. We even called the Doggy Lane team twice, but Dr Mann is not allowing even that.
Finance secretary Ravi Arora agreed that their initial demand was removal of dogs, but if it is not possible, they should at least be sterilised. Sinha said: Such complaints are being received from various other areas of the city as well. People have misunderstood our sterilisation programme. They assume the Doggy Lane will just take the dogs with them.
Dr Mann, however, said: The entire block wants that dogs should be removed from the area. That is why they are calling the Doggy Lane team repeatedly in the name of vaccination. The dogs are violent because the residents beat them. They themselves are responsible for the menace.
