Curfew takes its toll on wedding functions

The life came to standstill today as the curfew was imposed in all the parts of the city.

The life came to standstill today as the curfew was imposed in all the parts of the city. Throughout the day commuters kept facing difficulty in reaching their destinations as many were not aware of the curfew. Not only this but many people had to change the venues for weddings at the eleventh hour and had a tough time in arranging the new venues.

Parminder Singh,who was to solemnise the wedding of his daughter at Perfect Palace,today said,”We had to shift our wedding venue to Mohali as the wedding party was to come from Chandigarh. But due to curfew,we had to shift the venue,for which we had to face lot of inconvenience as well as monetory loss.”

While Simran Sharma,whose sister was to get married at Ludhiana today said,”We postponed the wedding for the time being as many of our relatives got struck on way to Ludhiana from other cities.”

While many people had tough time in reaching the marriage venues which were on city outskirts. The orders given to sweetmakers and halwais by the wedding parties also proved a dre blank. Narenderpal Singh,owner of Lovely Sweets,said,”We received 12 orders of marriage parties but all were cancelled today because of the question mark hanging over accessibility.”

It needs to be mentioned here that from December 6 to December 8 are the days when maximum number marriages are to be solemnised. Surinder Dhir,a resident whose daughter was to get married tomorrow,said,”Due to Punjab Bandh,we also postponed the marriage so as to avoid any unsavoury incident.”

Meanwhile,Punjab Roadways Transport Corporation provided its bus service only till 8 am and that too for the places like Mullanpur and Barna etc. An employee of PRTC who was sitting idle at inquiry office at the bus stand,said,”We did not get any bus service from other cities also. I cannot confirm whether buses will ply tomorrow or not.”

While the unaware passengers reached the city bus-terminus and returned as the bus service ground to a halt. Some patients also faced problem as the routes were diverted from many places.

Meanwhile,all the markets of the city remained closed,however the shops in some residential areas remained opened for some time.

Due to curfew,the Pulse Polio campaign was could not kick off today. Dr US Sooch,District Health Officer,Ludhiana,said,”We postponed it for the time being. The next date will be decided after some days.”
