Randhir Sibia ‘molests’ 20-year-old Dalit woman : Stages protest before police action : Lathicharge leaves six injured

Congress councillor from Ward 1 Rattanjit Kaur’s husband was arrested on Friday on charges of molesting a 20-year-old Dalit woman when she had gone to the councillor’s residence to get her ration card made on Thursday.

While the woman reported the matter on Thursday, the police did not take any action immediately, saying they needed to verify the allegations first.

Randhir Singh Sibia was arrested only after he staged a protest, along with five of his supporters, against the complaint. He staged a dharna outside the Salem Tabri police station and later blocked the national highway at the Jalandhar bypass. After the agitators allegedly misbehaved with Assistant Sub-Inspector Virinderjit Singh and Additional Station House Officer Sukhdev Singh, the police resorted to lathicharge,in which six persons sustained injuries.

Sibia was presented before district magistrate Jarnaib Singh, who sent him in police custody till September 10. Five others — Sukhdev Singh (Sibia’s son),Virinderjit Singh,Sukhbir Singh,Daljit Singh,Jagmohan Singh and Vikramjit Singh — have also been sent to jail on charges of causing law and order problem and misbehaving with police personnel on duty.

The protest demonstration by Sibia even before the complaint was officially verified has surprised many, including the local police.
