Cong logs biggest lead from Ludhiana West constituency, considered to be SAD stronghold

Ludhiana West constituency, which was once considered the stronghold of the Congress, provided the biggest lead to the party candidate Manish Tewari over SAD-BJP candidate Gurcharan Singh Galib in the Ludhiana Lok Sabha elections. This lead becomes significant as SAD candidate Harish Rai Dhanda had won this constituency from Congress candidate and former Punjab minister Harnam Dass Johar in 2007 assembly elections with a good margin of nearly 15,000 votes.

In the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, from Ludhiana West constituency,Congress candidate Tewari registered his biggest lead of over 30,000 votes over SAD’s Galib. With this, the constituency seemed to have been wrested back by the Congress.

Ever since winning this assembly constituency in February 2007,Dhanda’s base from here has constantly been on decline. It was first proved in August 2007 itself when a majoirity of the SAD-BJP candidates had lost the municipal elections from the MC wards under Dhanda’s constituency.

Not only in the terms of votes, but Dhanda has been on the losing side from his constituency as for as the faith of SAD-BJP supporters is concerned. At an election meeting during the campaigning for the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, there was a strong opposition of Dhanda by a group of BJP workers. Even chairs were hurled by the BJP workers to protest against Dhanda who had to slip quietly from that election meeting sensing the anger of those BJP supporters.

Besides Dhanda’s constituency,in other urban constituencies also,Tewari registered big leads over Galib. In Ludhiana East,Tewari got over 16,000 votes lead. In a newly carved out Atam Nagar constituency,Tewari got a lead of over 13,000 votes. From another new constituency,Ludhiana Central,Tewari’s lead was of over 21,000 votes. And from Ludhiana North constituency,Tewari secured his second best lead of over 28,000 votes.
