New MICS technique at Apollo
The cardiac surgery department of Satguru Partap Singh Apollo Hospitals,Ludhiana,has introduced multi-vessel beating heart coronary artery bypass surgery,using minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS) technique. The full range of MICS surgery is now available on regular basis at the hospital. Major advantages of MICS surgery is very early return to active life,with minimal pain and need for painkillers. Requirement of blood,hospital stay and chances of infection are significantly low as compared to the older technique, said Dr K C Mukherjee,senior consultant,Department of Cardio Surgery. Rashpal Singh,78,had suffered a heart attack a few months ago and his angiography revealed critical coronary artery disease requiring bypass surgery. Mukherjee said his team performed a surgery on him and the patient was discharged within five days.
Vet university announces new officers
The Board of Management of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University,which met on Monday,has approved the names of officers of the university for a term of four years. Registrar Dr P D Juyal said Dr Harpal Singh Sandhu,professor and former head of the Department of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology,was selected as Dean College of Veterinary Science,while Dr Sarnarinder Singh Randhawa,Dean Postgraduate Studies,would now be Director of Research. Dr Kulbir Singh Sandhu now be regular Director of Extension Education.
CIPHET ties up with Nurture Zone
The Central Institute of Post-Harvest Engineering and Technology (CIPHET) has licenced the technology of extrusion-based products of millets and barley,especially tailormade for infants and children. The institute has tied up with Nurture Zone for the purpose. Handing over a copy of the MoU to Veenu Sood,a Ludhiana-based entrepreneur running Nurture Zone,CIPHET Director Dr R T Patil said Indian foods could only compete in the market if they had something additional to entice consumers than the existing food items offered by MNCs made mainly from maize and rice. Senior scientist Dr Balasubramaniam,who has developed this technology,said they had especially developed extrusion food products for children in the age group of three months to one and a half year. He said these were highly nutritious and easy to digest.
Register online for blood
The Universal Human Rights Organisation has launched a website http://www.khoondan.net where one can register to get or donate blood. Satnam Singh Dhaliwal of the NGO said one could fill a form and get information about the availability of blood with this organisation. One can donate blood by filling a separate online form.
