A day after the city reported its first case of swine flu after a medical report of a Japanese national on a visit to the city was declared positive,a team comprising nodal officer for swine flu in the state visited the Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMC) and met the Japanese national and his three colleagues who have also been quarantined at the hospital.

The rapid response team today traced about 25 local contacts of the patient in the city.

“The person had attended a business meeting in the city with some officials of a business establishment here. Therefore, all those persons who came in contact with the patient during his stay in the city have been traced and we are going to give them medication for the next 10 days so that there is no risk of transmission of the disease to them,” said Dr Deepak Bhatia, project coordinator of Integrated Disease Surveillance Project and nodal officer to tackle swine flu in the state.

He said he was satisfied with the arrangement of the treatment of the foreign nationals who would have to stay here for a minimum of five days until the patient is declared cured and his colleagues declared free from the risk of the transmission of virus.

The visitors had come to the city on a business delegation and were returning to Delhi by air from Chandigarh airport when the health department team traced them at the Hotel Park Plaza.

Except Mura Kawa, the other three members of the delegation do not have any symptoms of the disease so far,the health department said today, but they are also been kept in isolated condition to rule out the possibility of having got the virus from the fellow visitor. “We have taken their samples and sent to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases,New Delhi,” Dr Bhatia said.
