Will comply,says Govt

Reacting to the Allahabad High Court’s directions to the UP government and the Centre to clear blockade of the rail tracks by Jats and restore traffic

Reacting to the Allahabad High Court’s directions to the UP government and the Centre to clear blockade of the rail tracks by Jats and restore traffic, the state government on Friday said it would comply with the court directions.

In a statement,Cabinet Secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh attributed the state’s lack of action so far to the absence of any communication from the Centre over talks with Jat leaders about their demand for reservation.

Jat representatives had met Central leaders thrice but the state government had no official information about it. In media reports, the leaders of the agitation had been quoted as having said they were negotiating with the Centre at the highest level.

Singh said Chief Minister Mayawati had written a letter to Union Home Minister P Chidambaram to take personal interest to resolve the issue of reservation for Jats at the earliest. She had also drawn the Home Minister’s attention to the difficulties created by the agitation for people.

On Thursday,Chief Secretary Atul Kumar Gupta had written to the Union Cabinet Secretary requesting Centre’s co-operation to deal with the situation.

He said the Jat agitation was not confined to UP and it had found echo in Rajasthan,Haryana,Punjab and Jammu and railway tracks had been blocked in other parts of the country.

Singh said the UP government supported the Jats’ demand for reservation, and appealed to the leaders of the community not to do anything which caused hardships to the people.
