On revival path,Congress hopes for a chunk of pie

With just nine sitting parliamentarians in the country’s largest state, the state Congress unit is hoping that this year’s Lok Sabha polls would script the revival of the party in the state after almost two decades of being in the political wilderness.

Party leaders say they were confident of winning in 13 constituencies and were in the reckoning in another seven.

This time, the party is also hoping for a rise in their vote share. In 2004,only 14 Congress candidates had got over 1 lakh votes. This time they are hoping that this number goes upto 45.

The party’s downfall had begun in 1989,when it had won only 15 of the 84 Lok Sabha seats. In 1998,the party failed to even open its account. Today, the party office was bustling with activity. In the main hall, training of counting agents was at progress. At the party headquarters, the leaders were busy in guessing games, making an assessment of the performance of the other parties as well. “We clearly see our revival in Uttar Pradesh now. When we were trying to forge an alliance with the SP,we had not expected this,” said state party president Rita Bahuguna Joshi. “It seems that the people of the state have finally decided to vote above caste politics and were tired of the regional parties. There is certainly a mood of celebration among the party workers,” she said.

“We do not accept the tall claims made by the BSP. We think that they will be getting around 20 to 25 seats and the SP would be slightly ahead of them,” said a leader.

Joshi described the SP as the natural ally of Congress, but did not completely rule out an alliance with BSP. “It is clear that the Third Front will not be able to form a government. Mayawati should support us as they also claim to be a secular party,” said Joshi.
