Waxing Lyrical

Just as you begin to admire the brilliant strokes in all the abstract paintings by Mrinalini Mitra, you are in for a surprise when told that the artist is only 13 years of age.

“Browsing through the catalogue of her paintings that was sent to me,I was taken aback to see how someone so young could create work so sublime,” said film writer and poet Padma Bhushan Javed Akhtar, who inaugurated the exhibition ‘Life By Canvas’ at State Lalit Kala Akademi,Aliganj on Saturday evening. “But a bigger shock was in store for me when I read two of her poems printed along with impressions of her work on canvas. It is frightening to think what heights this artist will reach when the beginning is so awe-inspiring,” he said.

“All the 33 paintings put up on display here are in oil and acrylic,” says Mitra,a student of City Montessori School, who has also participated and won in golf and tennis tournaments. “It took me about a year to paint all the exhibits,” she says. With titles like ‘Vermillion Shackles’ in which the plight of a woman tied in matrimony is etched or the ‘Moods’ series in which there is an eclectic play of colours depicting clouds, the artist exhibits a remarkable clarity of thought and adroit execution.

Her mentor Mohammad Shakeel,an artist of international stature, appealed to all to discover and bring to the fore such talents in their families, instead of pushing children into the conventional career options. “Mrinalini’s artwork borders on poetry and it is her muse that gives the master stroke to her work,” he said. Akhtar couldn’t help waxing lyrical about the talented artist, but doled out some sage advice too. “In any form art there is vision and there is craft. You may be gifted with the most unusual talent, but unless you train and practise, you cannot reach the heights of perfection. It is my advice to this child prodigy to visit the best of art galleries and read as much as she can to give her work whatever pinnacle of success she is destined to achieve,” he said, adding a note of advice for the patrons too.

“A very frequently asked question that abstract art evokes is what is the artist trying to say. My point is just as you don’t look for a meaning in the beauty of a flower or in the sweetness of a fragrance, don’t search for a meaning in the fine arts either. Rather, let the visual make an impact on you. If budding artists need to hone their skills through training, patrons too need to improve their levels of appreciation by becoming more receptive,” he said. The abstract paintings,on display from April 15 to 17,11AM to 7PM,are also up for sale at prices ranging from Rs 20,000 to 50,000.
