Varanasi ragging: 15 senior students rusticated

The decision to rusticate the students was taken by the college administration late on Wednesday night. “We called an immediate meeting of the proctorial board and the anti-ragging squad,which decided to rusticate the students,” said Sabha Shankar Tiwari,Principal of the college.

“While four students have been arrested in the case till now,the police have been trying to arrest the rest,” said Vijay Bhushan,SP City. Two students were already arrested in this case after the FIR was lodged.

“Most of the students have gone home as the college is closed due to holidays and we were only given the names of these students but not their addresses. Two teams are on the job of tracing their whereabouts,” said KK Pandey,SO of Shivpur.

According to the police,the first-year students had lodged a complaint against the seniors a month ago. They alleged that they were being ragged but the college administration did not take any action against the culprits.

“I took charge as the principal on September 1,and since then no complaints were lodged,” said Tiwari.  

On Wednesday evening,the fight between the first and third year students took place over a dispute regarding photocopying at a shop near the college. Thereafter,the seniors went to the New Hostel and beat up the first year students with sticks and rods.

“The security guards and the warden informed me about the incident and I went to the spot. 16 students were hurt in the attack and were immediately taken to the Deen Dayal Hospital,” said Tiwari. One of the students who suffered severe head injury was later referred to Sir Sunderlal Hospital.
