Deputy Commissioner of the Excise Department in Varanasi allegedly shot dead a former block development committee (BDC) member over an old enmity in Pratapgarh’s Sardih village Saturday morning.
The police have registered an FIR against the accused Jung Bahadur Singh (57) based on the complaint filed by the family members of the victim, Motilal Maurya (also in his 50s). The victim’s family have also named Singh’s wife and daughter who had accompanied the accused.
According to the police, the Singh was involved in a dispute over one bigha land with his cousin whom Maurya was reportedly close to.
Pratapgarh Superintendent of Police Akhilesh Chaurasia said: “Accused Jung Bahadur Singh arrived with his wife and daughter in Sardih Thursday and went straight to Maurya’s house, located barely 100 metres from his own. Singh said a few angry words to Maurya and then shot him in the temple with his licenced revolver. He escaped from the spot and is suspected to have fled towards Varanasi. We have sent teams in search for him. The supporters and family members of the deceased blocked the main road for some time when the body was handed over to them in the evening after the post-mortem. However, the jam was vacated after they were assured that action will taken. We are keeping a watch on the situation.”
The disputed land is located opposite to Singh’s house in the village and is equally shared by him and his cousin. “It appears that Singh had come determined to kill Maurya as he had arrived straight from Varanasi (to Maurya’s house) and later fled,” the SP added.
