A court in Ghazipur district on Saturday acquitted Samajwadi Party MP Afzal Ansari and five others in a 23-year-old case of alleged rioting and vandalism at the office of Mohammadabad sub-divisional magistrate (SDM).
All the accused were out on bail during the trial in the case.

The other accused in the case are Vikram Yadav, Gopal Rai, Shambhu Singh Yadav, Sharda Nand Rai, and Ziyauddin, all residents of Ghazipur. The court examined 13 prosecution witnesses before concluding that the prosecution failed to prove the charges against the accused.
According to the prosecution, the case dates back to August 9, 2001, when the SP gave a call for an Uttar Pradesh bandh.
In his complaint, the then station house officer (SHO) Satish Chandra Tripathi said a crowd led by Ansari, then an MLA, marched to the Mohammadabad sub-divisional magistrate’s office and created a riot-like situation there. When the police intervened, the mob vandalised the SDM’s office, it was also alleged. The FIR was registered under Sections 147 (rioting), 353 (assault to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of the IPC and provisions of the Criminal Law Amendment Act and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.
