Following the heavy downpour on Sunday night,an underground parking lot in Bhoothnath area was inundated, resulting in large-scale destruction. Several walls and houses were damaged, makeshift shops collapsed as well as roads caved in. Water, power and telephone lines were also damaged. The Lucknow Development Authority had dug up over 3,000 sq m area opposite Bhoothnath Temple to develop the underground parking at a cost of Rs 8.5 crore. Chief Minister Mayawati had laid the foundation of the project on February 5. The deadline of the project is March 31,2010.
The LDA Joint Director (Land and Development),SB Mishra, said the damage was caused due to soil erosion when rainwater from the entire area started flowing into the pit during the downpour.
The process to strengthen the walls and to drain off the water from the project site has already started, Mishra said.
Over 100 trucks have been deployed to dump sand and soil for levelling the area and strengthen the surrounding walls of the project site.
