Barabanki police have arrested two persons, including a 45-year-old freelance journalist, for allegedly uploading objectionable videos and comments about the ongoing Maha Kumbh on social media.

Police said the arrests were made because “the objectionable content could incite anger” among members of a particular community.

The arrested persons have been identified as Kamran Alvi, who claims to have previously worked with a media house, and 20-year-old electrician Abhishek Kumar.

Station House Officer of Kotwali police station, Alok Mani Tripathi, said they received information on Tuesday about an objectionable video related to the Maha Kumbh being uploaded on social media. Upon investigation, the police discovered that the accused had also posted objectionable comments alongside the video.

“We reviewed the content on social media and subsequently arrested Kamran Alvi. The accused has been booked under BNS section 299 ((deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs),” said Tripathi.

He added that the preliminary inquiry revealed Kamran was previously associated with a few media houses and is now working independently, running a news portal.

In a separate case, Abhishek Kumar has been booked for allegedly making objectionable comments about Hindu deities. “Abhishek Kumar was arrested following the registration of an FIR against him. He had uploaded photographs of deities on social media accompanied by objectionable comments,” said SHO of Jaitpur police station, Amit Pratap Singh.
