Traffic plan upgrade on cards

The state government is set to prepare a Short Term Traffic Improvement Plan for Lucknow and Kanpur cities.

The state government is set to prepare a Short Term Traffic Improvement Plan for Lucknow and Kanpur cities. The government has tied up with Delhi-based Urban Mass Transit Company Limited (UMTC) to study the traffic situation in both cities and suggest measures for immediate improvement in urban transport system there.

Officials said the UMTC will have to submit its report within two months and its implementation will start thereafter.

Similar City Mobility Plans (CMPs) are already being prepared for seven cities ¿ Allahabad,Kanpur,Agra,Varanasi,Meerut,Mathura and Lucknow. The cities are covered under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). The UMTC is preparing mobility plans to avoid traffic problems for over ten years.

“The preparation of CMPs for these towns will take some more time,” said Alok Ranjan,Principal Secretary,Urban Development Department.

“But as vehicular movement is much higher in Lucknow and Kanpur and the traffic situation demands urgent improvement,short-term plans are being prepared for both cities.”

The UMTC is already studying the existing traffic density and transport facilities available on various routes in Lucknow and Kanpur for CMPs. Using the data,it can identify the routes where improvement is urgently required.

Under the plan, the consultant will signify separate road zones for different kinds of transport — buses,rickshaws,bicycles,two-wheelers and four-wheelers. It will also earmark pedestrian walking zones on roadsides and suggest modification in design of crossings.

The consultant may also suggest making certain routes one-way at different times of the day when traffic density is high.

The plan will suggest steps to provide convenient transportation to commuters in these cities without any major investment. These steps could include an increase in number of buses to removal of encroachment from certain roads.

Depending on traffic density in a particular area, new routes will be decided for taxis and buses. Locations will be identified where smaller crossings can help. The suggestions could be implemented in duration of two to three months only.

The for the seven cities CMP is being chalked out following directives from the Union Ministry of Urban Development.
