Tehsil staff protest ‘arrest’ of colleagues

A day after the fake voter ID card racket was busted, employees of all three tehsils of Kanpur — Sadar,Ghatampur and Bilhaur — were up in arms following the arrest of four Sadar tehsil employees.

A day after the fake voter ID card racket was busted, employees of all three tehsils of Kanpur — Sadar,Ghatampur and Bilhaur — were up in arms following the arrest of four Sadar tehsil employees.

The three persons arrested by Kalyanpur police on Tuesday had claimed that the racket was being operated through the support of four Sadar tehsil employees — Nand Lal,Putti Lal,Sant Ram and Vijay Singh.

On Wednesday,a team of Kalyanpur police arrived at Sadar Tehsil and took two employees — Nand Lal and Vijay Singh — to the police station to record their statements. Annoyed, the employees of all three tehsils announced a work boycott. A 500-strong group surrounded the Kalyanpur police station. Their protest ended only after Lal and Singh were allowed to go.

The tehsil employees said the boycott will continue on Thursday too. The president of the state Tehsil Karamchari Sangh,Sarvesh Yadav, has raised the demand for a legal action against Circle Officer,Kalyanpur,Vipin Mishra. “Without any evidence against them, the employees were harassed by the police,” he said. They were even thrashed at the behest of the Circle Officer,he said. “Our protest will continue till a case is registered against the guilty CO,” he added.

The police, meanwhile, have denied making any arrest. The DIG of Kanpur,Hari Ram Sharma, said: “They were not arrested but brought to make a statement.” The employees have not been named in the FIR,but their names had cropped up during the investigation,he said.
