The Uttar Pradesh Police Technical Services has set up state’s first cybercrime laboratory, which besides collecting cyber forensic evidence will provide technical expertise in investigating such cases.

“We have set up the cyber crime investigating unit at the Technical Services Headquarters while the cyber forensic laboratory has been established at the Lucknow-based Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL),” said R N Singh,IG (Technical Services). “The technical know-how required for the job is being imparted by the experts hired from a private company to seven of the staff members and training would be completed by May 3,” Singh added. Just after the laboratory and the investigating unit are set up,a letter seeking cyber crime cases from the districts will be sent to the DGP Headquarters.

According to Singh, the investigating unit and the cyber lab have been equipped with tool kits required for retrieving data from computer hard disk drives and other forensic evidences.

For example,in offences related to sending threatening or obscene e-mails,the staff of the cyber crime unit would first try to track the Internet Protocol (IP) address. Nitin Chauhan, who is giving training to the staff, said once the IP address is located through e-mails,the unit members would rush to the spot with a tool called forensic duplicator which would help them track the particular hard disk used for sending the e-mail. After the machine is detected, the duplicator would retrieve and copy the digital image. The sleuths of the unit can also seize the hard disk drive if required.

The evidences collected from the spot would be sent to the forensic lab where the staff would retrieve the exact images to substantiate the offence committed by the suspect, said Chauhan.
