Congress party workers from Ambedkar Nagar district held a dharna outside party headquarters in Lucknow on Wednesday, alleging that state party president Rita Bahuguna Joshi had agreed to attend a public meeting organised by a BSP supporter on March 5.
They demanded that Joshi should skip the function.
Led by former legislator Priyadarshi Jaitley, the partyworkers said they had informed senior party leaders about the proposed programme a week ago,but they didnt get any response from them.
Since the state Congress president was in Delhi, senior Congress leaders tried to dissuade partymen from holding the dharna, but without any success.
Subodh Srivastava, chief spokesperson of UPCC said the partymen were objecting to Arvind Pandey who was no longer associated with the BSP,and was not in the Congress either. But we spoke to our district president Ram Kumar Pal,and he said that he will welcome the state president as he has no problem with her attending the programme, said Srivastava.
The Congress has planned to launch a statewide yatra from Ambedkar Nagar in April to mobilise partyworkers. But the party has been consistently facing problem in the district. During the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress had not fielded any candidate in Ambedkar Nagar, but the districts unit decided to support the SP candidate despite the fact that the Congress had decided to go alone.
Then the Congress leadership had reasoned that since the party did not field any candidate in Ambedkar Nagar, and there were no instructions from the high command about lending support to anyone, the district unit had taken its own decision.
