Plays in the genre of comedy/satire,irony,philosophy and romance are lined up for the three-day All India GSI Drama Competition: 2009-10 being held at the VKS Vardhan Auditorium of the Geological Survey of India in Aliganj.

Plays in the genre of comedy/satire,irony,philosophy and romance are lined up for the three-day All India GSI Drama Competition: 2009-10 being held at the VKS Vardhan Auditorium of the Geological Survey of India in Aliganj. Teams comprising have arrived from North,South,Central,East and West zones of the GSI are taking part in the annual feature,which is held in a different zone every year.

The plays will be in Hindi and other regional languages. Dialogue is not the only medium of expression in a play and gestures,intonation,sounds and even changing lights convey a lot,so a play in any language is enjoyed,whether the audience speaks and understands that particular language or not, says Manik Bhagat,mapping surveyor,who is leading the troupe from Nagpur,which comprises Marathi-speaking actors but will present a play in Hindi called Black Dot on Thursday.

Participants from various zones said they took about a month to prepare for the plays and the rehearsals would happen during the lunch hour every day.

The opening play on Wednesday was Parivartan,presented by the West Zone troupe from Jaipur. The satire presented in the madaari-jamhoora format took digs at the modern-day trends,politicians and was appreciated for the potshot at government officials. Sarkaari afsar to computer ke aage baith ke sundar ladkiyon ki photos dekthta hai (the government officer only watches pictures of pretty girls on his computer), said the jester in a scene of the play and drew a round of hearty applause.

The other play of the day was Kabih meaning poison in the Khasi language,performed by the troupe from Shillong and was about unrequited love and its repercussions on the life of a young man.

The highlights for Thursday and Friday include the host zone presentation Mo Ko Kahan Dhoondhe Re Bande (4:30 PM,Thursday). The Day-2 schedule,in fact,is hectic with four plays to be staged,including Kaavalkkaaran and Santheyalli Satthavaru by the south zone and Jamaa Khairaat by the east zone. On the final day,when the valedictory function would be held, the plays Black Dot by the central zone,Sumit Katha and Disha,both by eastern zone,would be the highlights.
