SP targets Congress,plays minority card

In an effort to counter the Congress’s bid to make inroads into the minority support base in Uttar Pradesh and also to reclaim its vote-bank

In an effort to counter the Congress’s bid to make inroads into the minority support base in Uttar Pradesh and also to reclaim its vote-bank,the Samajwadi Party on Tuesday advocated proportional reservation for Muslims in education and government jobs.

“The convention is of the opinion that Muslims should get proportional reservation in education and government employment to solve their problems,” said the political-economic resolution of the party’s eighth national convention being held here.

The resolution sought the implementation of the recommendations of Sachar and Ranganath Mishra committees, and the amendment of the Constitution so that Dalit Muslims can avail of benefits meant for Scheduled Castes.

Trying to counter the Congress on another front, the SP claimed that it was the lone party at the forefront of opposing the alleged misrule of the BSP government. “There’s been no vindictive action against the Congress and BJP workers. But more than one lakh SP workers have been booked under false cases,” alleged Mulayam Singh Yadav, who was re-elected as the party president on Tuesday.

The 16-page resolution devoted more space to attacking the Congress than the BSP government. The resolution slammed the Congress on a host of issues — inflation, corruption, external security, among others. “The convention believes that the UPA government has turned out to be the most scam-ridden and corrupt government. This government has made every attempt to shield the corrupt,so much so that it has been running down the PAC,JPC and even Parliament,” it read.

Apart from championing the issues of Muslim representation in various spheres, the SP also inducted former chairman of Delhi Minority Commission and executive committee member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board,Kamal Faruqui, into the party. Azam Khan was conspicuous by his absence, though party workers claimed that all was well between him and the party. The SP also sought speedy trial of the Malegaon blasts case to pave way for the release of innocent Muslim youths arrested in this connection.
