The traditional red Lohia cap worn by Samajwadi Party (SP) volunteers has changed from the simple handwoven red khadi avatar to a trendy sports cap. Though the old khadi cap still prevails among workers and is a must at party functions, the new cap is worn by SP chief Akhilesh Yadav’s team members.

This is one of the many changes ushered in by Chief Minister Akhilesh. The change is instrumental in shedding the rustic image of the party, which was perceived as anti-English,anti-computer and sticking to old ways. The party now boasts of a website,Facebook account, presence on Twitter,a media cell, etc.

Akhilesh had a photo shoot with youth leaders at the CM’s official residence at 5,Kalidas Marg. Every one of them sported the new cap. Even state SP spokesperson Rajendra Choudhary had one on.

“SP’s youth workers have been wearing the red khadi cap since its inception. It has become their identity,” said Choudhary.

It is known as Lohia Cap in the party, though Ram Manohar Lohia never wore a cap. “Yes Lohiaji never wore a cap but workers started wearing it during his period. I too wore it when I was state joint secretary of Yuvjan Sabha in 1969,” said Choudhary.

The cap was also banned by Lohia. “It was done by Lohiaji when some unscrupulous elements started doing shady things and got away with it in the garb of a red cap,” said Choudhary. The new cap has a circular emblem of the Samajwadi Party in front.

“This new cap was given to us by Akhilesh bhaiyya. It was initially meant for the close group who travelled on the Samajwadi Kranti Rath,” said Sunil Yadav, national president of student’s wing. It was brought by Akhilesh from New Delhi.

Veteran socialist,Rajya Sabha MP and national vice-president of SP,Brijbhushan Tiwari, however, differed. “It is fashionable and the younger generation is wearing it,but it cannot replace the old cap which has a history. But these youths also made history this time,so we cannot rule out this new trend,” he said.
