The police, meanwhile, continued to hunt in the dark, even though several teams have been deployed. The STF and the Special Operations Group as well as officials of the district police have also been involved in the investigation. Police officials said, the SO had tried to fire upon the suspects after he overtook their vehicle on Allahabad-Chitrakoot Road. A live cartridge from his pistol was found lying at the spot. It appears that he tried to fire, but the attempt failed and the live cartridge fell on the ground, said Superintendent of Police (Crime),Arun Kumar Pandey. He added that the SOs service pistol was found in his hand.
Deputy Inspector General (Allahabad Range),Dr N Ravinder, said that Dwivedi was on his way to attenda crime meeting and decided to check out the information about a looted car, which ultimately led to the incident. Dwivedi was chasing the looted car and had intercepted the suspects in Shankergarh area, when they opened fire and shot him dead around noon on Friday. Asked as to why the SO was not in uniform when he was going to attend the crime meeting,Ravinder said that his family lived in Kalindipuram area, which is in the city, while he was coming from a place that is on the outskirts. He may have planned to change his clothes at home and then report for the meeting, he said.
Apart from ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh, the next of the kin of Dwivedi would be getting all the benefits that are due to an officer laying his life in the line of duty. The staff of the Allahabad police would also be donating one-day salary to the SIs family.
