Snag hits mega recruitment drive for cops

The biggest-ever police recruitment drive in UP got off to a chaotic start across the state on Thursday as officers in the districts failed to access the recruitment board server to download the format in which details of the candidates were to be filled up and then mailed to the board.

The biggest-ever police recruitment drive in UP got off to a chaotic start across the state on Thursday as officers in the districts failed to access the recruitment board server to download the format in which details of the candidates were to be filled up and then mailed to the board.

After struggling with the technical snag all day,the board issued orders to the district SPs in the evening to do the work manually. But the process was delayed and recruitment teams in several districts were busy taking chest, height and other measurements of the candidates late in the evening.

Besides the technical snag, the board also failed to send call letters to the required number of candidates. While the officials had planned to scan 200 applicants daily, most of the districts received only 50 to 80 call letters.

Asked about the chaos,Additional Director General of the Recruitment Board V C Goel said,“The computers and bio-metric machines had been dispatched to 59 districts two days ago. The computers had to be installed by yesterday and the SPs were asked to ensure power availability and generators for use in case of power failure. But,majority of them have not made proper arrangements and the system failed due to power failure.”

Besides, the ADG said, the technical staff sent by the agency which provided the software failed to deal with the snags. “We have asked the SPs to continue with the recruitment procedure manually till the system starts functioning,” Goel said.

The SPs,however, said the computers and other gadgets reached several districts last night. Besides, and no meetings were held by the board to brief them about the recruitment procedure.

The board had adopted the new procedure to ensure transparency, eliminate human error, manipulation and favouritism. Since the system is not working, the measurement of the candidates is being recorded manually, something which has been the cause of complaints in the past.

The recruitment has been deferred in 12 districts where the model code of conduct is in force in view of the by-elections scheduled next month.
