Sitting SP legislator in state faces rape charges

A case of rape and criminal intimidation was lodged on Friday against sitting Samajwadi Party MLA from Uttar Pradesh,Anoop Sanda,after a woman accused him of raping her several times after promising to marry her.

On May 17,the woman was arrested and jailed for creating a scene at Sanda’s house in Sultanpur. Sanda is an MLA from Sadar constituency of Sultanpur. Sultanpur SP Ashok Kumar Raghav said the woman lodged the complaint under Sections 376 (rape),420 (cheating) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC. Probe would establish if the allegations were true,he added.

The SP said the woman was arrested after Sanda’s wife Amita Seth complained that she had forcibly entered her house and ransacked it. Seth had also alleged that the woman demanded money and threatened her.

The police had then registered a case under sections 384 (extortion),427 (mischief),452 (trespass),504 (intentional insult) and 506 (criminal intimidation) against the woman. She was sent to judicial custody and released on bail on May 27. The police filed a chargesheet against her on May 25,Raghav said. Additional SP Ajay Shanker Rai said the woman ran a beauty parlour in Sultanpur but currently stays in Aliganj area of Lucknow. She alleged the MLA had first raped her when she met him for a job three years ago. She alleged he later promised to marry her and again raped her several times. The MLA could not be reached for comments.
