Adding sparkle to the festival of lights is a vast variety of gift items cast in silver. Not just corporates, individuals too have a choice from among silver objects big and small, exorbitant and modest. While local jewelers offer more than just the coins, stores in malls and markets are showcasing more than just Ganpati.
There are playing cards, curios, platters, trays, fruit bowls, butter dishes, vases and candelabras presenting elegant fusion of silver with crystal, wood and stones. Dhanteras is the occasion to buy new utensils, but in keeping with the shifting trends,we have stocked up on items that exude world class and go well with the modern decor of homes and offices, says a retailer vending Evinix silverware, designed by Schroeders from Delhi.
Those looking for trinkets and trivia made out of the precious metal too never had it so good. Vinod Maheshwari, one of the biggest silver dealers of Lucknow and also office bearer of the Sarrafa Association, says most of the silver gift items are being imported from Mumbai and Dubai. “There are different grades of silver playing cards, made from 92.5 per cent sterling silver foils and thin sheets. Those from Mumbai are comparatively cheaper than those imported from the Gulf. These were launched last year and are a big hit this Diwali, says Maheshwari.
This year jewelry for the mobile phone is an innovation.
Small figurines and ghungroos have a struck a chord among the young women. For men, there are alphabet shapes, key chains and even cigarette-shapes to hang from the cellphone, says Maheshwari.
