An Assistant Professor at the Chandra Shekhar Azad (CSA) University of Agriculture and Technology,Mandavi Singh (32),was shot dead in the campus by an unidentified chain snatcher on Monday.
Around 5:45 pm,after completing her work,Singh was on way home in Nawaganj, when a youth stopped her near the campus guesthouse. After snatching her gold chain,he plucked the gold earring from her left ear. When Singh protested, the youth fired a bullet in her face, scaled the boundary wall and fled.
The CSA staff rushed Singh to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival. The incident took place barely 500 metres from the office of Inspector General (Kanpur Range) in the CSA premises.
Vice-Chancellor G C Tiwari said: A few labourers working in the Directorate of Extension office spotted the assailant, but before they could do anything,he escaped.
The labourers informed the VC that the assailant was around 25 years old and was clad in a green and white check shirt. Such an incident has not occurred in the CSA campus before, he added.
Inspector General GL Meena admitted that the incident is a major challenge for the Kanpur police. It is a fact that several chain snatching cases have been reported in the city, he added.
Singh was a budding scientist in plant pathology and three years ago,had received the Youth Scientist Award from UP Council of Agricultural Research,Tiwari said. She had been working at the CSA since 2003.
Her husband Anil Kumar Singh is an Assistant Professor posted in the Directorate of Extension at the CSA. Both belong to Gonda district, and had been allotted a house on the campus.
The couple had two children,Gudiya (6) and Ansh (4). Anil was in a state of shock after the incident.
Tiwari said both Singh and her husband were non-controversial persons and spent their maximum time at the institute.
