Uttar Pradeshs Sara Naqvi along with three other Indians PV Sindhu,Juhi Dewangan and Saili Rane made it to the womens singles main draw of the Syed Modi International Grand Prix Badminton Tournament being organised at the UPBA Academy,Lucknow. Sara was supposed to play her qualifying match against Saili Rane of Maharashtra this morning,but with a last minute withdrawal by Nepal shuttler Sara Devi Tamang,she automatically reached the main draw. This development helped Rane to qualify for the main draw.Another Indian Rachita Sahdev had already qualified for the main draw as she was given a bye.
In two qualifying matches this morning,PV Sindhu defeated Rucha Nikam 21-6,21-9,while Juhi Dewangan defeated local challenger Shivalaya Gupta 21-19,21-11.
The main draw matches of the six-day US$ 50,000 prize money tournament start from 9.30 am on Wednesday and will be witnessing the participation of top Indian shuttlers like Saina Nehwal who reached the state capital this evening.
Womens section top seed Saina Nehwal will face qualifier Juhi Dewangan in her first round match which will be held in the afternoon session. Her match will be followed by the match of men’s section top seed Chetan Anand who will face the winner of R Bajaj and S Nandaluri match in the second round. Chetan has got a bye in the first round.
Secretary Uttar Pradesh Badminton Association (UPBA),Vijai Sinha informed that Jwala Gutta has confirmed her presence at the tournament on Friday to attend her felicitation ceremony. She has agreed to come for the felicitation ceremony and would also attend the final days proceedings too. The top seeded mixed doubles duo of Jwala Gutta and V Diju,withdrew last evening as Jwala is not well, said Sinha.
Chief Secretary,UP government,Atul Kumar Gupta would be formally inaugurating the tournament at 2.00 pm. DD Sports will show the matches live.
